African-American Pioneers of Los Angeles, Featuring Biddy Mason

African-American pioneers have been integral to Los Angeles since its founding, from the original settlers in 1781 to instrumental figures in its later development and civil rights movements. When the city of Los Angeles was founded, 26 of its 44 original settlers were of African descent. Former slave Biddy Mason became a real estate entrepreneur and philanthropist, and one of the first prominent Black citizens and landowners in Los Angeles. This course will focus on her story and the stories of other Black leaders who helped to develop Los Angeles into the thriving, multi-cultural metropolis it is today. After class, we will also walk a short distance to Biddy Mason Park and view the artwork Biddy Mason Time and Place, a timeline of Biddy Mason’s life. Afterwards, we’ll enjoy lunch at Maccheroni Republic (lunch not included). Students must sign a waiver to participate
